Burnout. Just saying the word can bring up feelings of exhaustion and overwhelm. It’s something many of us face, especially when juggling work, family, and personal challenges. So, how do you avoid it? More importantly, how do you recover when it sneaks up on you?

I’ve been navigating this myself recently, especially after health issues and surgery. Here’s what’s been working for me:

1. Back to the Gym

Physical activity has been a game-changer. After recovering from surgery, I made it a priority to ease back into the gym. Exercise helps release endorphins, combat stress, and re-energize both the body and mind.

2. Prioritizing Rest

Rest is essential, but let’s be honest—it’s not always easy. With a 4-year-old child on the autism spectrum, uninterrupted rest can feel like a luxury. Still, I’m carving out moments to recharge, even if it’s just a few minutes here and there.

3. Daily Weighted Blanket Sessions

Using a weighted blanket has been one of my favorite ways to calm my nervous system. The gentle pressure provides a sense of security and reduces stress, making it easier to relax.

4. Meditation with Headspace

Consistency is key when it comes to mindfulness. I’ve been building a streak on Headspace, meditating daily to create a sense of calm and focus. Even five minutes can make a difference in shifting your mindset.

5. Morning Verilux Light Sessions

To counter fatigue and boost my mood, I’ve incorporated a Verilux light into my morning routine. This has been especially helpful for improving energy levels and combating the winter blues.

Why Burnout Happens and How to Fight Back

Burnout isn’t just about being busy—it’s about feeling disconnected from yourself and your goals. That’s why it’s important to create habits that nurture your well-being.

My Tips for Avoiding Burnout:

  • Set boundaries with your time.

  • Say “no” to things that don’t serve you.

  • Find small, meaningful ways to recharge daily.

  • Lean on tools like meditation, light therapy, or weighted blankets to support your mental and physical health.

If you’re struggling with burnout or looking for ways to calm your nervous system, let’s talk!. I’ll share a more detailed list of techniques that have helped me thrive.

Remember, you’re not alone in this journey. Burnout can be beaten—with the right tools and a little self-care.
