A warm, comforting hospital scene showing a pediatric nurse gently holding a young child’s hand while preparing for a blood draw. The child, about 5 years old, is sitting on an exam bed with a small blanket on their lap. A parent is seated beside them, offering reassurance. Soft lighting and a caring atmosphere convey safety, compassion, and hope.

Helping Kids Through Blood Draws & IVs: Tips From Our Journey

Does your child need a blood draw or an IV?

For most kids, it’s not a pleasant experience. For kids with sensory sensitivities or medical conditions, it can be even more overwhelming. Our family has had to face this often—especially now, since our 5-year-old autistic daughter, Eminence, was diagnosed with leukemia just two weeks ago.

Even before her diagnosis, we had discovered a few small adjustments that made these procedures quicker, easier, and far less traumatic for her. I’m sharing them in the hope that they might help another child, too.

1. Choose a Pediatric-Friendly Hospital

If you can, go to a hospital with a pediatric (peds) floor. Many of them use ultrasound guidance to locate veins quickly. It’s usually in and out—fast and efficient.

2. Use a Warm Compress

Before the needle stick, ask the nurse to apply a warm compress to the area. This helps the veins show up better and can make the process smoother.

3. Cushion the Tourniquet

We request that a small towel be placed under the tourniquet so it’s not directly pinching her skin. This small step helps reduce discomfort.

4. Ask for Numbing Cream

EMLA cream can numb the area before the stick. It might take a little extra time to apply, but it can make a big difference—especially for kids who are anxious or have sensory sensitivities.

5. Find the Right Person for the Job

Skill and compassion matter. If you’re near Bloomington/Normal, Illinois, I highly recommend Raven at Carle Health by the airport. She’s been wonderful—gentle, patient, and efficient. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
